I've been working on some ideas for ChatGPT. I'm a big fan of how beautiful and simple the new iOS app is, and I want to extend some of that magic to help users have an even more delightful experience.
One approach I took was the idea of collapsing conversations into chunks so they're easier to navigate. I mocked this up as an interactive webpage using some actual prompts.
I asked "What potential positive effects might come from ChatGPT adding ability to collapse chunks of text? Perhaps making it easier to traverse long conversations?" its response was as follows:
Improved readability
Efficient navigation
Enhanced organization
Contextual focus
You can read the whole conversation in the prototype.
Having started with the final output, let's walk through a bit of the process. I began with sketching this out. In the middle you can see the sketches relating to collapsibility. The other sketches refer to other UX improvements, which I might eventually mock up and publish.

I'll explore some of the other ideas on this page:
In the bottom right, under number "1" Improving the "swipe from the left edge" behavior: instead of triggering a pane from below, which is counter-intuitive, that UI should slide over from the left.
Numbers (2) and (3) in the bottom right discuss being able to easily swipe to previous / next / new conversations from within the chat interface, instead of having to open the full list of chats
Number 4 again is an improvement to the existing functionality; the "new chat" should visually slide out from the right edge, currently it just appears, which is not a very pleasant visual experience.
The red highlight indicates that there's some wasted space on the left edge. Given ChatGPT's tendency to ramble, this results in more scrolling for the user, and less text in a single view.
Older sketches
Event further back are some sketches showing that this collapse behavior could be access via a pinch gesture (middle) and a collapsed state could show adjacent (next/previous) conversations, where each vertical column of dots is a conversation. On the right of all the conversations exists the ability to open a new chat.
These were made in Apple Notes on March 29th, 2023.
Further improvements
The prototype isn't visually perfect, but it gets the message across. Additionally, more layers of collapsibility could be added. For example, this first numbered response from the ChatGPT conversation could be split into two sections, firstly the title (before the colon) and the description (after the colon)
Thus, some UI could be designed to "hide" the description behind a tap.
"Improved readability: Long conversations can sometimes be overwhelming to read. The ability to collapse text chunks would make it easier for users to skim through or focus on specific parts, enhancing the overall readability and comprehension.
This would basically allow the user to continually ask the model to elaborate on everything.
Hopefully this gets in front of the OpenAI team, I'd love to work for them! I'm currently looking for my next gig. Email me here if you've got any leads!
